If Tomorrow Starts Without Me

David Romano

When tomorrow starts without me,

and I’m not there to see,

If the sun should rise and find your eyes

all filled with tears for me,

I wish so much you wouldn’t cry

The way you did today,

While thinking of the many things,

We didn’t get to say.

I know how much you love me,

as much as I love you,

And each time that you think of me,

I know you’ll miss me too.

But when tomorrow starts without me,

please try to understand,

That an angel came and called my name,

and took me by the hand,

And said my place was ready

In heaven far above,

And that I’d have to leave behind

All those I dearly love.

But as I turned to walk away,

A tear fell from my eye,

For all my life, I’d always thought,

I didn’t want to die.

I had so much to live for,

And so much left yet to do.

It seemed almost impossible,

That I was leaving you.

I thought of all the yesterdays

The good ones and the bad.

I thought of all the love we shared,

And all the fun we had.

If I could re-live yesterday,

Just even for a while,

I’d say goodbye and kiss you,

And maybe see you smile.

But then I fully realized,

That this could never be,

For emptiness and memories,

would take the place of me.

And when I thought of worldly things,

I might miss come tomorrow.

I thought of you, and when I did,

My heart was filled with sorrow.

But when I walked through Heaven’s gates,

I felt so much at home.

When God looked down and smiled at me,

He said, this is eternity,

And all I’ve promised you,

Today your life on earth is past

But here life starts anew.

I promise no tomorrow,

But today will always last.

And since each day’s the same,

There’s no longing for the past.

You have been so faithful,

So trusting, and so true.

Though there were times you did some things, you knew you shouldn’t do.

But you have been forgiven,

And now at last you’re free.

So won’t you come and take my hand

And share my life with me?

So when tomorrow starts without me,

Don’t think we’re far apart,

For every time you think of me,

I’m right here in your heart.

The Last Rose of Summer

’Tis the last rose of summer

Left blooming alone;

獨自盛開的一縷花魂;

All her lovely companions

Are faded and gone;

美麗的同伴盡皆凋零;

No flower of her kindred,

No rose-bud is nigh,

更無蓓蕾相近;

to reflect back her blushes,

Or give sigh for sigh.

I’ll not leave thee, thou lone one!

我不忍離你而去, 你這孤獨的精靈;

To pine on the stem, since the lovely are sleeping,

百花皆已進入夢境,你卻還在枝頭獨自心傷;

Go, sleep thou with them.

thus kindly I scatter thy leaves o’er the bed

把你在花圃的落葉掃除;

Where thy mates of the garden

Lie scentless and dead.

So soon may I follow, when friendships decay

等到情意的花朵化為灰塵, 我就隨后把你緊跟;

And from Love’s shining circle

The gems drop away.

只是花草一春;

When true hearts lie withered,

And fond ones are flown,

當真愛已經(jīng)做古;

Oh! who would inhabit

This bleak world alone?

How to Meditate

Everything in the physical world is impermanent, changing all the time. Some changes are obvious: people grow up, get old, and die; buildings and bridges wear out and fall apart. The environment goes through a complete transformation from one season to the next; flowers wilt, paint cracks and peels, cars break down.

Our conscious world is also changing constantly. Sometimes we are happy, sometimes depressed; sometimes we feel full of love, other times full of anger. Memories of conversations and events, thoughts of the future, ideas about this and that fill our minds one after the other. A few moments of looking inward will show us how quickly the mind is changing: it’s like a railway station at rush hour! Streams of thoughts, feelings and perceptions flash by, in every direction, without ceasing.

This constant change is the reality of things, but we find it very difficult to accept. Intellectually, it is not a problem; but real acceptance of impermanence rarely, if ever, enters our everyday behavior and experience. Instinctively, we cling to people and things as if they were permanent and unchanging. We don’t want the nice person or the beautiful object to change, and firmly believe that the irritating person will never be different. And when we are depressed or dissatisfied, we think we will be that way forever.

We cling especially strongly to our view of our own personality: ”I am a depressed person,” “I am an angry person,” “ I am not very intelligent.” We might indeed be this or that, but it is not the whole picture nor will it always be like that; it will change.

By not recognizing impermanence we meet with frustration, irritation, grief, loneliness, and countless other problems. We can avoid experiencing them by becoming familiar with the transitory nature of things, recognizing that they are in a constant state of flux. Gradually we will learn to expect, and accept change as the nature of life.

We will understand not only the changes simply happen but also that we can bring bout changes. We have the power to change what we are, to develop and transform our minds and lives.

Our mind is composed of many parts: thoughts, perceptions, feelings, memories and images following one after the other, ceaselessly. Spend a few minutes simply observing the ever-changing flow of experiences in your mind, like someone looking out of a window onto a busy street, watching the cars and pedestrians passing by. Don’t cling to anything that you see in your mind, don’t judge or make comments – just observe and try to get a sense of the impermanent, ever-changing nature of your mind.

It is unrealistic and self-defeating to cling to things as though they were permanent. Whatever is beautiful and pleasing will change and eventually disappear, so we can’t expect it to give us lasting happiness. Also whatever is unpleasant or disturbing won’t last forever-it might even change for the better! So there is no need to be upset, or to reject it.

The time that my journey takes is long and the way of it long.

I came out on the chariot of the first gleam of light, and pursued my voyage through the wildernesses of worlds leaving my track on many a star and planet.

It is the most distant course that comes nearest to thyself, and that training is the most intricate which leads to the utter simplicity of a tune.

The traveller has to knock at every alien door to come to his own, and one has to wander through all the outer worlds to reach the innermost shrine at the end.

My eyes strayed far and wide before I shut them and said `Here art thou!’

The question and the cry `Oh, where?’ melt into tears of a thousand streams and deluge the world with the flood of the assurance `I am!’

Life Resides in Waiting

Many desert plants have a very brief life cycle: they can run through the whole course of life in just a few days after rain. As described by a friend from Gansu province, a certain flowering plant in the Gobi Desert, on the heels of a soaking rain, is able to sprout, take roots, grow leaves, blossom and bear fruit all within a lifespan of merely eight days.

Then seeds of the new generation will enter the same inactive, waiting phase of existence. In the Gobi Desert, which seldom sees a single sufficient rain in a whole year, a plant may wait two years for only eight days’ glory of life. For these desert plants, contrary to common sense, waiting constitutes the main part of life.

All life involves a waiting phase. We can even go so far as to say that a living thing, without the ability to wait, is not qualified for existence in this world.

In addition, the waiting ones are sober-minded. They know the waiting phase of life calls for ready acceptance of silence and solitude, as well as a cool head to size up the situation and act at the right moment. This waiting includes the potential for action and embodies the tensions of life. There may of course be dead seeds, but otherwise, no seeds will oversleep and refuse to wake up or stay idle and hesitate over whether to take action.

They are highly alert to the changing temperature and humidity with a view to seizethe right chance. What is more surprising to us is that they even know the direction of gravity. By dint of a certain sense organ in them they let their young roots strike downward and their sprouts shoot upward.

Some seeds receive even more care from their mother plants. For instance, a species of toadflax boasts a sensitive mechanism which directs its stems to carry its capsules away from the light and release the seeds in places cool and moist, thus more congenial to germination. Doesn’t this show a mother’s affection towards her offspring?

For all forms of life, the waiting phase can be seen as an arrow on a taut bowstring. Aimed at growth, it silently waits for the right signal from Nature.

When I Wander

When I wander

don’t tell me to come and sit down.

Wander with me.

It may be because I am hungry, thirsty, need the toilet.

Or maybe I just need to stretch my legs.

When I call for my mother

(even though I’m ninety!)

don’t tell me she has died.

Reassure me, cuddle me, ask me about her.

It may be that I am looking for the security

that my mother once gave me.

When I shout out

please don’t ask me to be quiet…or walk by.

I am trying to tell you something,

but have difficulty in telling you what.

Be patient. Try to find out.

I may be in pain.

When I become agitated or appear angry,

please don’t reach for the drugs first.

I am trying to tell you something.

It may be too hot, too bright, too noisy.

Or maybe it’s because I miss my loved ones.

Try to find out first.

When I don’t eat my dinner or drink my tea

it may be because I’ve forgotten how to.

Show me what to do, remind me.

It may be that I just need to hold my knife and fork

I may know what to do then.

When I push you away

while you’re trying to help me wash or get dressed,

maybe it’s because I have forgotten what you have said.

Keep telling me what you are doing

over and over and over.

Maybe others will think

you’re the one that needs the help!

With all my thoughts and maybes,

perhaps it will be you

who reaches my thoughts,

understands my fears,

and will make me feel safe.

Maybe it will be you

who I need to thank.

If only I knew how.

Don’t take them for granted

Every community is made of people. Some people we know well and some we will never meet. Some we trust, love, value. Some we doubt, ignore or have never noticed before.

Some come into the light in times of crisis. Some never make it out of the shadow. Some have mysterious roles that few dare dream up, while some have duties so essential they become invisible.

People. Not machines, not robots, not passports. Not colors, not numbers. People. Fraud, concerned, endangered, imperfect, unfinished. People. And all of us are tied to each other, visibly or not, by our dependence.

We may forget about some professions, because of their routine functions. But even life-saving actions, we will always overlook something or someone. But we cannot ignore that each and every one of us is somebody’s someone.

Behind every suit, every mask, every meal, every checkout, every delivery, every service, every step, every sentence, every headline, every statistic is somebody absent, someone needed.

A needed mother, father, daughter, son or brother, sister or niece, cousin, grandmother, grandfather, nephew. Somebody’s someone. Someone’s somebody.

So, we must try try to remember, relate, repair, reform, remind. Today, yesterday, tomorrow in extremes and in routines. If they are present for you, they’re absent for someone else. And if they stop breathing, they would be missed.

Don’t take them for granted!

The Fellowship of the Ring

Home is behind, the world is ahead,

And there are many paths to tread

Through shadows to the edge of night,

Until the stars are all right.

The hobbits sat in shadow by the wayside. Before long the Elves came down the land towards the valley. They passed slowly, and the hobbits could see the starlight glimmering on their hair and in their eyes. They bore no lights, yet as they walked a shimmer, like the light of moon above the rim of the hills before it rise, seemed to fall about their feet.

“Go not to the Elves for counsel, for they will say both no and yes. Elves seldom give unguarded advice, for advice is a dangerous gift, even from the wise to the wise and all courses may run ill. But what would you? You have not told me all concerning yourself; and how shall I choose better than you?”

Frodo問:“Where shall I find courage? That is what I chiefly need.”

Gildor對Frodo說:“Courage is found in unlikely places. Be of good hope! Sleep now! In the morning we shall have gone; but we will send our messages through the lands. The Wandering Companies shall know of your journey, and those that have power for good shall be on the watch. I name you Elf-friend; and may the stars shine upon the end of your road!”
